My Students

I teach 5th grade math at a Title I school located in rural Kentucky to 64 students, all of various genders and ethnicity. This year, I have been blessed with some of the most energetic and caring students I have ever had the privilege to teach. These students strive everyday to do their best to reach their highest potential! They are a very smart group of kids who, unfortunately, have a limited amount of resources to utilize. I, as a teacher, understand that because our school is of a high poverty status, it is very difficult at times to accommodate students’ needs and to make sure that students have every opportunity to learn and succeed.

Our community has an unemployment rate of 17% and 82.5% of our students belong to households that are at or below the poverty line.

Almost 90% of our students are on free and reduced lunch. These students LOVE using marker boards and markers, however because of our limitations, teachers have to supply the students with resources. This is not realistic for a teacher to do throughout the entire school year, even though we want to do whatever we can to help them succeed!

My Project

Pencil and paper seems to be the old school way of teaching. However, many skills require the use of a pencil and a piece of paper in order to assess. I have seen throughout all of my years of teaching that using markers and marker boards are a great way to motivate students in class to do their best and work hard. They love it! It is so much more enjoyable than pencil and paper! These LCD writing tablets would allow for endless practice for my students in any subject area, specifically in math and they would be thrilled! Students will be using these writing tablets to do many activities where using pencil and paper just isn't as enjoyable. Another added bonus is the fact that we will be saving so much paper!

Students will be creating a house blueprint on the writing tablet where they must label the dimensions of each room and calculate the area of their house.

They will, then, present their house plan to the class on their tablet and the classmates will calculate the area of the students' created rooms.

The activities are endless with these writing tablets. We would also use these tablets for daily assessing of basic skills that my students are required to know this year. We use pencil and paper every day for these assessments and these pieces of paper end up being thrown away. With the writing tablets, we will no longer as to waste paper and pencils.
