Our class is comprised of eight, amazing students with autism across three grade levels who learn in many different ways. Our students come from different wards from within DC, not just from the surrounding neighborhood. Our class is a self-contained classroom, which means that the majority of each students' learning takes place within our room. Many of our students also receive some instruction in the general education setting and are able to interact and socialize with their typically developing peers throughout the day.
Autism is a developmental disability that affects the way our students interact and communicate with others.
Autism is a spectrum disorder and our students' skills and abilities fall all over the range of the spectrum. We have students who are approaching grade level academically as well as students who are not yet communicating verbally. Each of our students is unique and has their own strengths, gifts and support needs. All of our students need support in the areas of communication, behavior, social interaction and daily living skills.
My Project
There are many pieces to what makes our clasroom run like a well-oiled machine. It is a combination of our amazing students and teaching team in addition to the materials that we use to learn each day.
Our students benefit from the use of visual supports to learn their best.
We are requesting multiple items that will continue to aid in this area. A projector will help display step by step instructions for activities up on the board as our current one is broken. Binder pockets will help to hold upcoming work and dry erase pockets will give students a place to reuse activities which are completed with a dry erase marker. We are also requesting toner which will allow us to continue to print out visuals such as picture icons, visual schedules, and token boards. Lastly, we are requesting a gift card to TeachersPayTeachers which will allow us to access more resources online to support student instruction.
