My students need 3-ring binders to organize their worksheets. We do lots of practice on whiteboards, so markers get used up quickly. Pencils and colored pencils are used to learn note-taking skills.
Working with students at a large NH high school, I find that many of my students don't have the resources to purchase school supplies. Many are living at or near the poverty level. Many students in my classes are new to the country and some have not had any formal education. Most students don't know what school supplies are needed in an American high school!
I want to be able to give these students an opportunity equal to the more experienced financially secure student, without feeling overwhelmed by all the new opportunities our school district offers.
My Project
Students in my math classes are from around the world and from every economic group. In addition to teaching math, my students also learn study skills. Using notebooks they learn how to organize their work, with colored pencils and pencils they learn note-taking, with colored expo markers they complete whiteboard practice.
Our goal is to teach students to be lifelong learners!
The culture of hope created by strangers donating supplies cannot be measured on any test. We see it every day in every class, as students smile and work hard to be successful. The positive culture in our building is a powerful force.
