My students need accomodations to assist in their daily academic tasks including a Soothing Time Audio Relaxer, three seating discs, and pencil grips to help them succeed.
My 12 special education students all have a multitude of sensory needs that distract them from attending to lessons. To stay on task, students benefit from wiggle seats, fidgets and soothing music.
We are a lively, energetic, first grade self-contained special education class in a Title I school in the Bronx.
All my students have sensory processing difficulties that can cause them to react differently to sensory input. My students often find the demands of the everyday classroom distracting, anxiety provoking, and sometimes completely overwhelming. This often causes them to give up in the classroom. These sensory difficulties can make learning challenging in the school environment.
My Project
All my students have different needs when it comes to learning. However, they can all benefit from the requested items because it will accommodate their sensory needs within the classroom. Listening to soothing music during independent work will help them relax and focus better. Research shows that information processing improves when listening to soothing music. Wiggle seats are necessary for my students who have sensory processing and focus challenges as it allows them to enjoy just the right amount of movement to maximize their focus without needing to get up from their spot. All of my students have difficulty with fine motor skills and a pencil grip would help them with their writing skills. It will help my students learn to write neatly at a reasonable speed without tiring easily. Poor pencil grasps do not use the hand muscles efficiently, and results in the child tiring easily and being unable to produce neat handwriting.
Having these sensory materials will help my students to learn using their senses and ultimately, learn hands-on and through experience.
They will be able to focus and apply what they have learned without feeling frustrated or overwhelmed.
