Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The most important lessons that we teach are not within the curriculum, but they are the lessons that show students how to work together, respect one another and manage their emotions effectively. These skills are not only needed in life, but also help them to be better people.
Though our school district and school know the value of implementing a social emotional curriculum, and they know the benefits of a student body with strong social emotional skills, no funding was set aside to acquire materials that could support our instruction in these important lessons.
We currently do not have an organized curriculum in place to help our students develop appropriate social and emotional skills. It is very apparent that we lack the kinesthetic and interactive resources that can truly engage my students in social emotional lessons. We are a fantastic group of energetic, third, fourth, and fifth-graders in an inner-city school. We are a Title I and Provision II school. This means that 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch daily. Our parents struggle to meet the basic needs of their families. Parental involvement and two-way communication is minimal.
My Project
We would use the funds from this grant to purchase a variety of games and resources that teach social and emotional skills. We would purchase social skill board games. There are also games to make children aware of the consequences of the decisions they make. Teachers, and support staff will also be the beneficiary of this grant with life-skill curriculum's that include interactive reproducible activities that teach students how to cope with everyday life social situations. In addition, we would purchase emotion card sets, social situation activity cards, and a few other interactive games such as conversations starter games. We also need folders to keep our social skills and collaborative project work.
With this grant all of the students will benefit from learning essential life skills in a fun format, thus reducing behavior issues and improving academic performance.
This grant is requesting the most important resources our school seeks as we move to improve the quality and relevance of our classroom instruction to our students' lives.
