Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our STEM high school is a 100% free and reduced-price lunch charter school in Kansas City, Missouri. Our student population, a mixed demographic of primarily Hispanic, Somali, and African American students, is over 50% ESL. Many of these students have experienced trauma and/or grown up in families where their most basic needs are often unmet.

Reading outside of assigned work is a challenge for our high school students.

Providing them with great young adult literature that reflects their experiences, understands the experiences of others, and sees the "what if" possibilities of the future is vital to encouraging and developing them to become enthusiastic life long readers.

My Project

The Dark Matter of Mona Starr is an excellent graphic novel chronicling a teenager's navigation through the dark matter that is depression, anxiety, social self-consciousness, and learning to accept oneself.

Many of my students are dealing with some or all of these 'dark matter' issues and would benefit greatly from reading this book and talking about Mona's very relatable experiences in a safe circle.

The school social worker and I have identified a number of our students who for various reasons are in need of SEL support and being assured they are not alone and what they are feeling can be managed and worked through. We plan to do a book study including activities similar to the ones Mona engages in to help her deal with her dark matter with some of our students who have expressed similar feelings.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
