Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a speech-language pathologist, I work with students who have Autism Spectrum Disorder and other communication needs. Many of my students use echolalia, or “scripting,” to communicate. While this may sound repetitive, it is actually a meaningful way that some children learn and process language.

There are two main ways children develop language: analytic language processing and gestalt language processing.

Many of my students are gestalt language processors, meaning they learn language in larger “chunks” or scripts before breaking them down into flexible, original words and sentences.

This project will fund my participation in the Meaningful Speech® Course, a professional development program focused on understanding and supporting gestalt language processors. Through this training, I will learn how to better identify how my students communicate, understand the stages of language development for gestalt language processors, and use strategies that support spontaneous, functional communication.

Many of my students rely on echolalia throughout the school day, and I want to better understand how to turn those moments into meaningful communication growth. This training will directly impact the students I see every day by helping me respond more effectively to how they already communicate.

This learning is important because it will directly improve how I support my students in developing meaningful communication skills. When students are better able to express their needs, thoughts, and feelings, they are more successful in the classroom, build stronger relationships, and gain greater independence.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
