Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Everyone belongs. Everyone achieves." Our school motto is not just said around our hallways, but truly felt within our classrooms and hallways. Hundreds of students from around our large city arrive every day ready to be a part of our school family where we work to create an inclusive environment in which every student is able to shine.
With students from all over the world, our school is a place where we are able to honor our diverse backgrounds and to grow together in our learning experiences.
Our students are not only learning their specific grade level core curriculum, but many are also learning English! Our school is located in a large urban district and 75% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. This group of students is learning to work together to help support their own grown as they expand their knowledge.
My Project
This program will allow for readers to have access to Wilson Reading instruction. Wilson Reading is a rule based reading intervention program that has proven success for struggling readers and students with dyslexia and specific learning disabilities. This program will allow my students to have equal access to the general education curriculum and to be successful readers. Wilson Reading allows for explicit instruction in phonemic awareness and phonics to help students become stronger decoders. With this specialized instruction, students will be able to independently read by recognizing specific phonological patterns in the English language. This will help them to read with fluency and, therefore, impact their comprehension.
This project will fund the purchase of Wilson reading materials for levels 1-6 of instruction as well as the WIST reading assessment kit.
This assessment kit will allow the teachers to know exactly what strengths and deficits a particular student may have. In knowing this, we will be able to target instruction for each individual student.
As a teacher who works with students throughout the building, this project will positively impact students of all ages. It will also help our English language learners gain the skills they need to be successful readers in English.
