This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Too often, school-based speech therapy is regarded as highly structured and repetitive, with the main goal being to teach students how to produce specific speech sounds and grammatical rules. Though it is often structured this way for some students, for others, speech therapy primarily focuses on the teaching and generation of natural language. As a soon-to-be third-year speech-language pathologist, this will be my first year in a full-sized classroom, meaning that I finally have the space to provide my students with a safe and comforting area to learn and practice speech-sound and/or language structures while expressing themselves and fostering their creativity. The rug, which is required to be fire retardant per school fire codes, shelf, and pretend play set will all come together to form a cozy area for students to interact and play during their speech therapy sessions.

The products I have selected encourage students to engage in tasks that may feel overwhelming or frustrating, such as using novel language structures, playing with other students, or correcting speech-sound errors during game play.

With the items identified, I hope to make my students excited to play, learn new things and practice what they have been taught. I hope to continue to be able to add to this area so that students get the most out of their speech therapy at school!
