My students and I live in Virginia and are part of a design school for our county. Our school, while still being public, is focused on providing students with authentic and hands-on learning experiences each day. Our entire school day is centered around project-based learning and completely worksheet-free.
I teach in a special-education inclusion classroom and my students come from over a dozen different ethnic backgrounds.
I have never met such a creative, considerate, and resilient group of kids! They are energetic, curious, and love to explore the world around them! We focus each day on being positive world changers who inspire and build each other up.
My Project
Navigating this stressful time has been difficult for adults. We like to think of childhood as a time of innocence and blissful ignorance, but children can feel the chaos of the world happening around them. They can feel the tension in the air as they walk through the supermarket wearing a mask, when they overhear hushed conversations between parents downstairs, and while they trying to experience Kindergarten with strict safety precautions. Times are tough right now for adults AND children. All of the books selected for this project are focused on teaching strategies for children to deal with the pandemic and to open tough class conversations during this unprecedented time.
