Children learn about the world around them through through books. Books serve as their first introduction to the outside world. Rudine Sims Bishop published a theory comparing books to windows and mirrors. Children's books can act as both windows and mirrors of the world. Books that act as mirrors reflect the reader's own lives and bliefs. Books that act as windows give reader's the opportunity to learn about someone else's life. Children's books that teach diversity are more important than ever. Research on prejudice shows that coming in contact with people who are different helps to reduce stereotypes. This is because when we see people who initially seem different, we learn about them and get closer to them through their story. Books that act as windows for students open up their world and what they view as "normal." The books on this list all feature LGBTQ+ characters and/or families. It is important for all of our students deserve to be represented in the literature they are exposed to at school and it is also important for students in a hetero-normative household to see other family styles represented and learn about our beautifully diverse world.
