Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our Bruins are spirited, talented and resilient. We are a high school with about 1,400 students in Louisiana. We have a diverse student body with students from all over the world, many new to our country and learning English for the first time.
On the announcements every day we are reminded, "Once a Bruin, always a Bruin because here, we are the difference." We have a unique environment where students are invested in our school and feel empowered to make a difference when they see a need.
We have a wide range of talents and interests across our campus: from students enrolled in our nursing or automotive programs to students leading the way for our district in Restorative Practices and Leadership classes to students building and designing sets for our impressive Bruin Theater Alliance, to our many talented student-athletes that lead beyond the field and court.
My Project
This on-campus supply center at our school, the Bear Necessities Shop, is a student-led initiative that continues to grow and make an impact on our students. We have a goal of creating a sustainable program that supports students with food, hygiene, school, and clothing supplies. When students have their basic necessities met they can focus better on becoming our future leaders.
Provide on-going support to our students by filling our shelves with shelf-stable food, hygiene supplies, and school necessities.
With the leadership of our student restorative facilitators, we have developed a system for distributing supplies to students who need them that preserves their dignity and builds the dialog about food scarcity on campus. Our students are not only supporting their peers but developing empathy and leadership skills. We are continuously growing the service we offer and the number of students we support and we need your help to do this.
