Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a dual-immersion bilingual program in Spanish & English. That means our 24 students receive half of their instruction during the day in English, and half of their instruction in Spanish. Our tight-knit community is made up 15 English learners and 9 English-only students.
Our students understand that learning in two languages means putting in twice the work.
Whereas students in other classrooms may only have Guided Reading in one language each day, we get it twice! The students in our program are some of the hardest-working kids I've ever met, so as a teacher I want to make sure that I take every opportunity to foster their growth and satisfy their curiosity. Incorporating hands-on experiences in science, technology, and the arts is one of many foundations of our learning. Please help us in supporting this instruction, so we can help create a generation of well-rounded and impactful thinkers!
My Project
Our class does art projects every Friday, where we study the work of famous artists like Frida Kahlo and Jacob Lawrence, and use different materials to create our own pieces inspired by the artist's style. Everyone in our class looks forward to doing art...except, maybe, for the teacher. Cleaning can take up to an hour on a Friday afternoon, after students have already left.
With such limited space in our classroom, we have to resort to rather creative methods of cleaning up our materials and setting our artwork out to dry.
It's not uncommon for surfaces all over the classroom to be covered in student work, all of which needs to be cleaned up Monday morning. A drying rack would give us a place to keep our artwork to dry over the weekend that's out of the way. A dish rack would help us wash and dry our water cups and paintbrushes.
Our watercolors have also seen more than one year of use. The colors are starting to mix, and we could use some new sets. Thanks for your generosity!
