In the eloquent words of Carl Rogers, “If we value independence…then we may wish to set up conditions of learning which make for uniqueness, for self-direction, and for self-initiated learning.” These words truly embody my own beliefs on the development of any education program.
In my role as a teacher, I actively incorporate inquiry-based experiences to enhance student engagement.
I hope to ignite passion for science in the next generation with these laptops to support technology literacy and offer my students more opportunities for independent research. All of my students greatly enjoy STEM activities and classroom presentations. However, many of my students do not have technology at home and lack the basic computer skills, such as creating presentations and searching the Internet. They truly enjoy getting to go to the computer lab to conduct research. However, the computer lab availability has been greatly restricted due to the computer based standardized testing.
My students need 7 Acer C720 Chromebooks and protection plans to conduct research, create presentations and utilize electronic formats to enter data during labs. Technology allows students to play dynamic roles in their learning experiences thus promoting the refinement of students’ problem solving and critical thinking skills. With access to technology, students will have more opportunities to engage in research and they will be able to utilize Google docs to analyze data collected during experiments. Science is a dynamic field; technology will allow my students to stay up-to-date on current research and findings. This research can be used to provide evidence for educated decision-making during the analysis to trends in data collected during experiments.
Technology can help to truly support and facilitate problem-based learning.
Problem-based (or inquiry-based) learning is essential for intrinsically motivating students to quest for knowledge. Technology can support students in the development of higher order thinking skills and nurture an interest in scientific concepts. Technology allows students to play dynamic roles in their learning experiences thus promoting the refinement of students’ problem solving and critical thinking skills.
