Studying an instrument at the elementary level is an experience that every child should have the opportunity to do. Unfortunately, not all students are in a position to buy or rent a suitable instrument. Our school has an inventory of instruments to lend to such students. However, this inventory is aging and the cost of maintaining those instruments is not a priority when it comes to school-wide budgeting. This project is aimed at filling that need at least partially, starting with the most cost-prohibitive instruments: violas, cellos, and basses.
This project benefits students in four ways. First, it increases the number of instruments available for those who wish to take part in our strings program but cannot afford to either buy or rent an instrument. Second, it updates our inventory to ensure that these instruments are in working order. Third, it provides instruments that are generally more cost-prohibitive (especially bass). And fourth, by increasing the opportunities on these instruments, our program has a much more balanced instrumentation which makes our orchestra a better experience for everyone. More students participate, they are not held back by the quality of their instrument nor in its selection, and the program is stronger musically.
