This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Akira is a specially trained therapy dog who has joined our school as a part of our ongoing commitment to creating a supportive and caring environment for our students. We believe that having a therapy dog on campus has a positive impact on the well-being and overall experience for our children.

Akira will visit classrooms, participate in reading sessions, and be available to offer support and affection to any student who may benefit from spending time with her.

Research has found that animal-assisted intervention in the form of reading aloud to a dog in a classroom setting contributes to improved skills and attitudes. Reading skills are often associated with improved academic performance and positive attitudes about school in children. Just the presence of a therapy dog can decrease anxiety and enable students to work through issues such as anger management and other social difficulties. Introducing a therapy dog into our school will be a key tool for forming social interactions and enhancing academic skills for many of our students. There are so many benefits for a school to have its own therapy dog!

To ensure that every classroom is set up for Akira to do therapy work, we are requesting a bed, blanket, treats, and books for each classroom she will be working in as well as a baby gate for her "office" and stickers to give students when they visit with her.
