Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class, led by Ulysses and Samuel, has chosen to support our inner city high school's first ever rugby team. The girls on the team constantly give their best effort both mentally and physically, but they currently lack the equipment they need to succeed.
We thought this would be one of the best ways to involve our girls in a sport and to bring them together as sisters. We came up with this project because we felt this could help our school learn more about other sports and to include a new sport to expand our strong athletic program. As the program is still in its premature stages, they are barely getting by with their school-provided PE uniforms. They currently utilize the football team's shield for their practice, which must be difficult considering both teams share the same season and practice schedule. These girls work really hard in school and on the field, and their potential should not be hindered due to a lack of resources.
Our students will develop skills through this project by learning a new sport that most inner city schools don't know about and excel in it through hard work and also your help. They will learn grit, problem solving, and our school motto of "no fear no embarrassment", which will help prepare these athletes for college. It is important to harness the true abilities of every individual on the team, which they can show through a commitment in the classroom and on the field. Our school's rugby program deserves the chance to flourish and establish itself as one of our school's most sought after sports. By funding this program, you convey a message of hope and generosity. When the program was merely an idea, it was very hard to imagine this program getting off of the ground. You can help send this program into the sky. When people see that our girls are comfortable and able to play rugby to the fullest of their ability, the possibility of there being a boy's rugby team might realize.
In Their Own Words
As a school started in 2009, being on the near west side of Chicago does not exactly correlate with fancy classrooms, full sized athletic fields, or even brand new equipment. The surrounding neighborhood is littered with gangs and poverty, even though the median household income a couple blocks down is $62,770. The equipment will help us surpass any economic barriers, as that cannot be an excuse for as to why these girls cannot play rugby and participate in this new experience.
The coaches are very busy because they teach full time and have their own advisories on top of their coaching responsibilities. They are passionate about student success. We are helping them manage this project so they can focus on being great coaches. This will allow the coaches to create the best environment for these girls to learn and better themselves as athletes.
The reason why this project is so important is because it makes us stay off the streets and make better choices and life choices. This also important because this opens up more opportunities for example, like a sports scholarship for college. This project is important because it teaches discipline and self control. Also, this experience personally benefits us too. The project makes us better as people and can prepare us for our future in college and on the workforce.
