I teach at a high school on the west side of Chicago that has high expectations for students along with high levels of support. One of the best features of the school is its special education department. At our school, students with disabilities are offered a wide variety of environments to best suit their unique learning style. I work in a self-contained classroom, which means each student in the room has a disability. Growing up with a learning disability, autism, or a cognitive impairment is not easy, and the challenges are compounded when you come from Chicago's south and west sides. But my students are relentless in their work ethic, masters of comedic timing, and unfailingly kind. They deserve the very best, and should not be limited by the resources that are currently available to them.
