Help me give my students additional opportunities to enhance our ability to collaborate and create in a comfortable seat that allows students to move while thinking and learning.
My students are third graders in a school about an hour from Washington, DC. We are creative learners, inspired to dream big and try our best every day. As a teacher, I want to prepare my students for the 21-century economy. My students are bright and hard working. My students are inspired by science, technology, engineering, arts, and math to be future-ready innovators.
We are problem solvers who want to take action to make our community a better place.
We work hard every day, but to achieve at the highest level, many students require flexible seating options to be comfortable, creative, and ready to collaborate.
My Project
Parents supported our initial wishes to implement mindfulness and self-care strategies this academic year to meet the goal of promoting more inclusive environments for all students. Our school focused on learning social and emotional strategies, resilience, and ways to improve equity and counter bias. We embraced the invitation to adjust learning environments in order to meet the different learning styles of their students. After obtaining five Kore chairs this year, we are seeing the benefits. engage a student’s core to create stability and better posture while providing a way for students to move their body in an appropriate way that does not distract from their work.
Flexible seating alters the physical space of a classroom to create a learning environment that can help a student focus on what they are learning as opposed to focusing on trying to focus.
We, as people, are natural movers and shakers. Young students can’t always turn that off. The flexible seating in our room provides an opportunity for students to use a tool that manages their physical need to move that won’t interfere with their learning. In fact, we see learning gains. Now we would like to add to our flexible seating options, so children that need and want the Kore seats can gain access. Students are writing and reading with greater fluency, spending more time engaged in math and science, and increasing their engagement with social and emotional learning.
