My Students

Do you remember what it was like to try to see examples of work to be done on a blurry, out of focus overhead projector? This is what I am still using (when it works)! In order to differentiate my instruction to meet my student's wide range of needs, a doc camera would help immensely!

I have the most amazing group of first grade learners!

I have already learned so much from them about teaching and life and feel grateful for getting to work with them every day. The students in my classroom come from very different places--some not knowing where they will spend the next night, and some very comfortably living. I find this diversity to be one of the hugest assets to our classroom. Just as we have very different backgrounds of students, the range of learners I have in my classroom is very diverse as well. I have students working on pre-kindergarten skills and students working at a mid second grade level and everything in between! Trying to be sure I support my most struggling students while challenging my highest achieving students is one of the most difficult things about my job.

My Project

As I think about how a document camera would enhance my teaching, it's hard to know where to begin! To start, as students enter my room they do morning math work while I meet with a small group of students (my first of 6 reading groups). This math work with examples could be projected up and ready when students walk into my room, helping them be more independent while I meet the specific needs of more struggling students. Every day we have a morning meeting where students share, we play a game, and greet each other as well as edit a message from me. Directions for the game, my message, and examples of morning work could be projected during this time to assist my students and enhance their understanding of the content. Math leads to many more opportunities to use the doc camera and projector. My routines like math warm ups, games, and sharing of student's strategies could all be displayed on the doc camera. This would lead to optimal engagement of all students.
