I teach Advanced English/Language Arts to third and fourth grade students in my school's Gifted and Talented Program.

My gifted students need quality literature that will challenge their abilities and deepen their vocabulary, taking their thinking to a higher level. We need a classroom library filled with award winning novels and classic literature. Offering these reading materials will encourage them to self-select meaningful, quality literature, not only in the classroom, but also for independent reading enjoyment. At this point, we have very limited resources for the 60 plus students that I serve.

I need to enrich our classroom library with award winning literature and classic novels. The children need resources readily available for independent reading that go beyond the average chapter book. It can be challenging to find good, quality literature that is of interest to young children who are capable of reading, understanding, and interpreting such works. When children can hold the books in their hands, look over the covers, and flip through them, they are much more interested in the stories they choose to read. These advanced learners need to be challenged with quality literature. Fostering not only a love of reading, but also a love of classic literature from award winning authors, is a vitally important part of supporting these special needs children. Many of them need to be encouraged to make good reading choices and having an enriched classroom library is a key component to making that happen.
