As a teacher, my job is to help my students grow and learn in a warm and safe environment. In order for my students to be ready to learn, they need more than books, paper and pencils. Children need a safe place to live, nourishing food, clean clothes, health supplies, and supportive relationships in addition to the materials they need to learn. Children experiencing homelessness may not have consistent access to these basic needs, which can impact their well-being and ability to learn. I have learned that if I want my students to learn and grow, I must be attentive to all their needs.
The children in my class who are experiencing homelessness are just like all the other children: bright, curious, hardworking, and helpful; yet they quietly face extra challenges and worries: what will I eat?
where will I sleep? How is my family? These challenges can lead to anxiety, fatigue, and other feelings that make it hard for them to learn each day. This project aims to provide students experiencing homelessness with some basic supplies at school so they have one less thing to worry about.
My Project
Students experiencing homelessness may not be able to count on the basic needs that many people take for granted. With this project, they'll be able to find basic necessities at school for free. If they need fresh clothes, they will find clean socks, underwear, shirts and pants in many sizes. If they need a new backpack, they'll find a new one in lots of colors to choose from. If they need a snack after school, they can grab one. If they need a toothbrush, deodorant, lotion or pads, those will all be there, too.
These materials will help my students have one less thing to worry about.
These materials help us truly care about our students as whole children, helping them feel safe and comfortable as they learn at school.
