My Students

My students are absolutely darling! They are at the age where they are starting to be more independent learners, but still need a lot of individual instruction.

They are hard-working kiddos, but we have a huge range of ability levels.

My Project

Learning during Covid has drastically widened the gap with reading ability levels. Some students continued to progress with supportive families and a natural love for reading and school. Others have struggled with little access to instruction. My number of struggling readers has increased and their frustration with reading has increased because they are so far behind.

All of my students, but especially my struggling readers, benefit from reading from their own Humphrey chapter book while I do read aloud.

I read from my book under the projector so they can track with me in their own book. They learn expression, prosody, fixing mistakes, and fluency from listening to me read. Students are motivated to follow along in the Humphrey books because the story is more challenging & interesting than most books they are exposed to. Even struggling readers can follow word by word which supports readers by connecting the sound of the word to the visual word. Reading the book as a class, then independently afterward is the scaffolding many students need to access quality text. Students also relate to the story because Humphrey, a classroom hamster, explores life in a classroom community and the challenges students face. In addition to supporting reading skills, our class benefits from the insights Humphrey offers and the awesome conversations it provokes in class.
