My Students
I teach in an urban public high school in Maine. Our 1500 student population is diverse and a majority live at or under the poverty level. Our tax base struggles to support the school system. Some of the classrooms in our building have desks and chairs that date back to when our building opened in the 1970's.
High school students need to have alternative ways to demonstrate their knowledge!
I have many students who do not have, and cannot afford, basic school supplies! Our system can barely afford to provide classrooms with many essential supplies, let alone any extra supplies. My students have reading Lexiles between 300 and 1300. They need tools available to meet their learning needs. I desperately want to provide them!
My Project
By using tools like Story Cubes, Sketchnotes, FlipGrid and OnePagers, students can use alternative ways to show what they know. Having multiple sets of StoryCubes, sketch paper, sophisticated colored pencils, sketch pencils, colored pens, expanding file folders and composition notebooks, Students will have multiple tools available to them with which to create and take pride in their work!
When students receive instruction and are told they have autonomy over how they demonstrate their knowledge, then are excited and more often produce work that at least meets the expectations.
People buy with their eyes! Having the right tools may make all the difference with students’ success!
