My students need school supplies such as copy paper, colored pencils, notebooks, crayons, tape and toner cartridges to have a successful start to the school year!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a public school in Chicago, IL with a majority of our students coming from low income families and where one hundred percent receive free lunch and breakfast. We are a pre-k through sixth grade school that works hard to build a family community. We often teach generations of family members and many students come back to visit after moving on to other schools.
My students work hard with what they have but unfortunately, they don't have a lot.
They are eager to learn and experience life, but most of them do not get out of their neighborhood to have these experiences. Our school district is limiting our funds every year and it's hurting our students. We can't give them as much as we'd like to or as much as they need.
My Project
I have chosen the supplies that my students need on a daily or weekly basis that many of them are unable to get themselves. We use copy paper, crayons, colored pencils, pencils, glue and composition books every single day. Our vocabulary program requires copies to be made and a journal for the students to keep. We use the copy paper to copy the necessary pages and the glue to keep them attached to our vocabulary journals (the composition books). We also use copy paper for various foldables and the crayons and colored pencils to add some creativity to our learning.
My students are eager learners that soar when they are prepared but due to circumstances out of their hands, they are not always prepared with the necessary supplies to help them soar.
Materials such as paper, crayons, colored pencils, tape and notebooks will allow my students to start the school year off, on the right foot, with all supplies necessary and they won't have to worry or stress out about coming to school prepared. As eight and nine year olds, they will be able to focus on their learning and growing instead of on how they will get their supplies.
