This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Hi All! My name is Ms. Cooper, and I am entering my first year of teaching at a Title I school this fall! I am going to be teaching sixth grade mathematics at a middle school.

My goal for my students is to build a community and space that feels cheery, bright, and welcoming for them when they enter my classroom.

Learning will always be the number one priority, but I want them to get to know their classmates and me so they have someone to lean on during their first year of middle school. Flexible seating is one way for students to feel more informal and comfortable to build connections. (White boards, markers, clip boards, and floor cushions). Alternative lighting (floor lamp) also gives students with sensory sensitivities a break from harsh overhead lighting to promote productivity.

Within my classroom, we will utilize composition notebooks to take notes and I want all my students to have access to them. Rulers will also be utilized to make number lines and many measurements students learn in 6th grade. Anchor charts will also be co-created by students and teacher, so they are more invested in their learning. I also aim to create an organized and tidy environment, hence the organizational supplies that will help students find what they need. Students also will be celebrated with birthday stickers and posters around the room that reflect their heritage.

I also have a few items to supports students physical needs, such as snacks and feminine hygiene products, which are required as students enter middle school.
