This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the opportunity to teach preschool students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing in a low income area. Many of my students come from Spanish speaking homes which means they are learning 3 languages: Spanish, English and American Sign Language. They are all eager to learn and hunger for language.

Many times when my students start school, they have no way of communicating with their family, peers or teachers.

They enter school at the age of 3 which can be a scary transition. Some are ready to say good bye to mom and dad while others have a difficult time. My goal is to provide a adequate learning environment that provides the supplies they need to become successful in their learning.

My Project

The needed supplies are materials that allow myself to provide visuals for my Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. Not having the sense of hearing means my students best learn by using pictures and manipulatives they can hold, feels and engage with.

Teachers are never given all the materials they are needed and teaching in a low economic area means I have to come up with these supplies out of my own pocket.

Every year I am printing lots of colored pictures on cardstock and laminating them so they last a long time. The materials (cardstock, laminating pouches, and ink) will allow me to continue to add to my collection of materials and create doubles so I can also send home materials for families to engage with.
