Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Empowering Students Through Art!! Creating art is such an important part of child development and I want students to create art that looks diverse. We need art supplies to make a visual representation of the character they dream up.
My students are an inquisitive group of second graders who are excited to learn!
My second grade classroom is located in an urban community with the vast majority of students qualifying for free or reduced price lunches. We have a diverse community of students with a high number of English Language Learners. As with many California districts, our school is facing budget cuts, making it difficult to provide these students with the supplies they deserve.
My Project
We write a chapter book in second grade where each student develops a character. An important part of the process is creating a visual representation of the character. I want the children to choose colors that truly represent how the children see their character. I'm lucky to have such a diverse classroom and I want them to be able to portray that through their art. My students need people cut-outs, wiggly eyes, a stapler and bins to store supplies and keep the art separated by group. We need editing materials (white-out and red pens) to develop our story.
The visual arts and humanities has taken a backseat in the world of standardized testing and Common Core.
