My Project

Each morning, the students gather for a response circle where they respond to a question and review the classroom rules. My plan is to teach financial literacy by connecting earning an income with following our class rules. We have five rules. Rule #1: Follow directions the first time given by all adults. Rule #2: Raise your hand and wait to be called on. Rule #3: Stay in your area unless you have permission to get up. Rule #4: Make smart choices. Rule #5: Keep your hands, feet, and unkind words to yourself. Students will earn one cent for each rule they follow each period for a possible forty cents a day.

As the students earn money, they will make exchanges for equivalent amounts and deposit the coins into their individual “bank”.

Snacks such as Rice Krispie Treats, Swedish Fish, Cheez-its, Lay Potato Chips, lollipops, Reese Peanut Butter Cups, Welch’s Fruit Snacks, and Skittles will be used to set up a classroom store. The items will be priced differently according to size. Each day, the students will have an opportunity to spend their earnings or save up for a higher-valued item. This will allow my students to learn and apply financial literacy while being reinforced for demonstrating the classroom rules.
