This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school. My students face challenges every day in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they are so excited about school. School is a safe place for them, a place where no one can hurt them, physically or emotionally. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch because for many students, school is the only place where they will be able to eat.

Although odds may be against them, they have the perseverance to succeed in school.

They are some of the most resilient students and are ready to learn every day. My focus is to give them a rich learning environment with positive experiences and hope for their future. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best.

My Project

To support them in the rigorous coursework, AVID students learn organizational and study skills, develop critical thinking, learn to ask probing questions, receive academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities to make their college dreams reality. The materials requested will create an AVID binder which is the cornerstone of the AVID program. It will be the greatest organizational tool they will learn. The folders and dividers will allow the students to house all their math work for the entire year. The AVID binder is essentially a student's whole school life enclosed in one safe place.

The materials I have requested will become the key to my students being successful in the AVID class.

AVID gives my students the skills and strategies to be successful in school, begin to take more rigorous courses, and successfully complete college eligibility requirements.
