We are an integrated collaborative teaching (ICT) first-grade class, with a mixture of general and special education students at a large high-needs, Title I school in the Bronx. Although the majority of students come from low-income homes or from homes with limited parental involvement, they are enthusiastic and come to school every day ready to learn. These children see school as a consistent part of their daily lives and strive daily to make me proud.
My 22 first graders are some of the happiest children I have ever had the pleasure of working with.
They inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.
My Project
We are in need of several items to ensure success in our classroom. We have gotten an influx of new students recently and don’t have enough chairs in the classroom, so we’re requesting two chairs so that these new students have a place to sit. This will help them feel part of the class and integrate them into our classroom community.
In first grade, we do a lot of word work during Guided Reading, phonics and reading workshop.
A tabletop easel would be helpful for small group instruction. I pull groups of 3-4 students throughout multiple points in the day to give them guided instruction and a small easel would help these children see what is being taught. They can also utilize it to share their thinking. Dry erase markers help them show their thinking and reinforce concepts that are being taught. My first graders love working with dry erase markers because it’s easy to fix their mistakes and they can also protect the environment by cutting out the use of paper.
