Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 6th grade special education math teacher at a large, urban, high need public school. Many of the students in the school qualify for free or reduced lunch. I teach 3 math classes a day to students with a wide variety of special needs. One of my classes is substantially separate from the general education classroom. There are 10 students in this class, most of whom have a language processing disability and some of whom also have attention deficit or behavioral disabilities. All of my special education students access the math curriculum in unique ways that require an inventive approach to teaching and learning math.

This year my students have shown more focus and engagement with math when they have basic art supplies readily available. They use our basic supplies to represent their thinking visually, create models, or diagram concepts. I am also a visual art teacher and am a firm believer in integrating the arts into other subjects. Therefore, I support their use of art supplies during math classwork. Each student, however, often has trouble organizing materials. We also only currently have one marker per student, and a complete lack of pencils, sharpeners, and individual cases to contain our materials.

We really need more markers. We do not have erasers or enough pencils. Students also need manual pencil sharpeners (these are silent, as opposed to a loud electric sharpener). We need rulers, and most of all the students would love to have their own math case that holds their rulers, markers, and other supplies. The students will be more organized and they will have the basic materials they need to be successful in math.

Your donation would make math learning more accessible to special education students who attend a high need public school. Any contribution would make a huge difference. When students have the supplies they need we can focus on learning and not on where to find a pencil! Thank you!
