Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds. They are hardworking and I strive to make them understand what they are capable of if they try. My students come from low economic status homes and many receive free or reduced-price lunch. They love hands-on projects and interacting with their environment. They are a joy to be around and I cannot imagine me doing anything else but teaching. I truly love and care about my students. They are truly amazing.

My Project

Teaching children the importance of their environment and how to keep it healthy is a subject that needs to be stressed in today's school systems. When we study the Earth and its different cycles (water cycle, food webs, succession), it is important to integrate art into the science content. By creating, imagining and producing works of art, my students are able to gain a better understanding of the planet they live on. I want my students to be able to make colorful, vibrant and spectacular drawings. Pictures of the water cycle, posters of preserving our natural resources and brochures on endangered species are just a few of the activities that my students can create with these supplies.

Many of my students come from low-income families that cannot afford basic school supplies such as pencils, binders, pencil pouches, and markers.

Without these supplies, it is a challenge to inspire students to learn using art and creativity. Being a science teacher in a high poverty school district limits the amount of supplies available. Having hands-on experiences in science allows children to use their imagination to create wonderful works of art and amazing projects. Hardship is a constant challenge many of my students face, both inside and outside of the classroom.

Despite these challenges, many of my students strive to become an outstanding individual through hard work and dedication. Meaningful learning experiences and creativity can provide an outlet for students who face these heart-breaking obstacles every day. With better resources such as pencils, binders, pencil pouches, and markers, I know that my students will have more opportunities to expand their education and be successful. My students may not always have the utensils at home to be creative, but I want to be able to give them this opportunity in my classroom.
