This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My first grade students are always eager to enter my classroom with smiles on their faces ready to leave the problems of their home life at home. Eager to suck up all the knowledge I have to offer them like a sponge. 85% of my students have little to work with when it comes to learning creatively.
My students are an energetic bunch of first grade students from an urban community.
My classroom has a variety of special learning needs. This ranges from students who are severely behind to students who are very advanced. Some students struggle with emotional behavioral challenges. However this does not stop their desire to learn or their love and need for engaging lessons. I have made this a personal goal for myself this year. I am constantly looking for fun and creative ways to teach the new Common Core Standards. My students attend a K-6 school with 100% of the students receiving free and reduced lunch.
My Project
My students need pencils, crayons, markers, whiteboards, and other supplies to kick off their first day of First Grade with common, quality supplies will use these supplies to strip away the insecurity and anxiety about "who has what" to create a level playing field in the first few weeks of school. My hope is that when my students walk into class on the first day of school, they will not only be excited about pencil boxes full of quality, uniform supplies, but I will be able to use these supplies to immediately begin teaching respect, responsibility, and accountability. These are crucial lessons in building strong foundations for social emotional, and academic learning. The materials I am requesting will alleviate the emphasis on "stuff", for my students and myself, so that the focus during the first days of our school year can be on relationship building and creating a positive classroom culture.
By having the materials in the classroom waiting for the kids when they come in on the first day of school, they will know the classroom was prepared specifically for them!
These school supplies will help my students make the most of the school year.
