My Project
Thank you for checking out my project! I teach special education resource. My students have a mix of disabilities, and generally have a painful history with the subjects I teach (8th grade math and 9th grade Language Arts). My goal is to help them connect to these subjects in a way they haven't before. Most of my previous projects have been for graphic novels for my Language Arts students, but now it's time to focus on my math kids.
To further equity of instruction, my district has adopted a new math curriculum that focuses on project-based, interactive, inquiry-based learning, which includes some necessary materials that my resource class does not currently have.
These materials include compasses, protractors (I had some, but most got broken or lost last year), patty paper, chart paper, and index cards. This new curriculum will help foster higher-level thinking and build deeper conceptual connections with the content by challenging students to figure out concepts for themselves rather than being given steps and formulae.
In addition to the materials the curriculum itself requires, I am also requesting a couple of classroom items to help me better teach. I do not have an office chair for myself- the wheels on the plastic chair I've been using don't work. I need a functional one to work with small groups as well as to work on IEPs when students are not present. I have also requested an easel and some chart paper- as I've learned this new math curriculum, it involves a number of class-generated posters, which I have not utilized before.
