My Special Education Resource Language Arts students have histories and disabilities that have created an aversion to reading. It is my goal to change this. I have included graphic novels or illustrated versions of some of the novels other 9th grade classes study in class, books showing diverse experiences that I believe certain students will be especially interested in, and bookshelves, including a storage bench to give students a place to read other than their desk. At my school, 9th grade studies memoirs, dystopian novels, Shakespeare, and literary fiction, which can feel dull to teenagers, so I want to include graphic novels of these to make them more interesting. When possible, I have included sets of one per table group of 3. My ideal would be to have one for each student, but I would rather have a few copies of a variety of books than a class set of one book.
