Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are delightful and ready to work. How many teachers can say that? There are approximately 120 sixth grade students in our lower middle class community. Many of our students come from generations of poverty and lack basic resources and support needed to be successful in our school.
72.1% of our students are eligible for the National School Lunch program with 60.6% receiving free lunches.
The lack of resources should never be an excuse for inadequate learning opportunities. Along with family, friends, and parents, I am providing classroom supplies out of pocket.
My Project
With no funds in the budget for major purchases, students have been using their new found cooking skills to raise money for cooking utensils and small appliances through bake sales. I am requesting an air fryer, a frying pan, and a bagel cutter. Without these everyday items students will not have the opportunity to learn advance cooking skills.
This program was started in order to fill students' needs to learn skills that can better their lives now and in the future.
Not only are students broadening their horizons they are preparing themselves to be responsible adults.
When asked why they chose to take this class I had a 7th grade boy explain that he "took this class to prepare for adulthood" and so that when he finally moved out of his parent's house he would know what to do with his own.
