Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year I have the pleasure to have an amazing class of 21 students. Our school is Title I and 100% of the students qualify for free lunch. I feel very lucky to have been able to teach this amazing group of students this year. I’ve seen how some of my students that struggled in certain areas are flourishing and made me proud to see how hard they have worked throughout the year.

I like to provide my students with a positive and respectful environment.

Unfortunately, my students sometimes see the total opposite when they leave the classroom and re-enter the world. Many of my students deal with unfortunate circumstances of life when they are away from school. Most of my students were either born in another country or have parents that are from another native country. Because of this broad range of differences, I always strive to make their classroom a place of peace, love, and escape, where they can learn and play.

My Project

This project will be centered around two classroom engagement activities themed around Valentine’s Day and St Patrick’s Day.

While I am still ironing out the details for connections to other subject areas, these items will definitely be used to increase engagement during upcoming math units.

For Valentine’s Day, students will become Cupid’s measurement assistants as we solve problems involving customary and metric units. For this activity we will be using the Nerd's candy rope. They will also be exchanging some cards using positive adjectives and I will provide them with goody bags to give their friends.

For St. Patrick’s Day, students will be learning about money and helping Larry the Leprechaun solve problems to locate his pot of gold. There is also a book about a leprechaun that I plan to conduct a read-aloud with.

I'm expecting that students will be highly engaged while learning critical, grade-level content that actually gives them the foundation for measurement and money - an important foundation for years to come, as it pertains to upper grade math content, as well as the real world.
