Super Science Experiments!

My students need 5 sets of bacterial transformation materials, 3 bottles of bacterial growth medium, 2 sets of two different DNA molecular weight markers.

My Students

Making bacteria that glows! Seeing real DNA with your own eyes! These are just two of the lab experiences I would like to share with my students. These techniques have been incredibly influential in modern science and my students would be THRILLED to have them be a part of their lab activities!

My students attend a large public high school with limited funding.

Our science supply budget is being reduced ever year, leaving my incredibly bright, intelligent, and capable students with less exposure to more modern techniques in the sciences. My students work incredibly hard to prepare themselves for a successful college experience, but I find that as the dollars are cut, the less my students are able to experience more developed and delicate laboratory science. They are an incredibly tenacious group of young scholars who deserve experience with all the modern scientific techniques they can!

My Project

These resources will provide my students with exposure to techniques they have only read about or seen on television. In addition, the experiments they perform will be an incredible preparation to the types of labs they will perform in college. The supplies I have requested will be used for two separate experiments: DNA electrophoresis and bacterial transformation. In DNA electrophoresis, DNA is applied to a porous matrix and separated using electricity. Students will be able to visualize individual DNA bands by staining the gel with a harmless blue dye. This technique is routinely used in forensic science and will allow students to apply their conceptual knowledge of DNA and its properties to explain their results. The second experiment is a bacterial transformation, in which students will introduce foreign DNA into a bacterial cell that will cause the cells to glow! This is a basic introduction to DNA cloning, an essential technique in any molecular biology lab.

The typical science experiments my students read about either seem antiquated and irrelevant or incredibly advanced and out of their reach.

I want to bring the technology to them and allow them to experience first-hand the real magic of modern science and their ability to both perform the experiments and analyze their results. These experiments, although relatively simple, will support the sense of curiosity and wonder all teachers work to cultivate in our students!
