My students are incredibly capable, intelligent, and insightful. They are also part of a system that has failed to inspire them or tap into the amazing potential they have as future scholars. My students have had a limited amount of exposure to texts that are thought-provoking and interesting; most of their exposure to reading has been through outdated textbooks and school-based assignments. I want to provide an environment where reading for fun is nurtured, where students are able to search the shelves and find a book that interests them, be it a sci-fi novel about time travel or an investigation into the mass production of food in the United States.
