Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All of the students at my school are eligible for free lunch. Also, a majority of our students are English Learners whose parents may not be high school graduates.
The goal at our school is for all students to aspire to attend college and have a plan for a future career.
Our school is located in an urban neighborhood with several colleges in our city, but many students may not see themselves as potential college graduates. We want them to see their primary language as a strength that they can build upon. Students in my class have this opportunity since we learn in both English and Spanish.
My Project
These subscriptions to Scholastic Storyworks magazine will give each of my students the opportunity to develop their reading comprehension skills. These high-quality classroom magazines are designed to help students meet our new Common Core Standards for literacy and College and Career Readiness. Each of the six issues comes with activities that help students practice and learn higher order thinking skills.
Students enjoy reading the articles, poems, and stories, which help them grow as readers. Each magazine has high-interest texts in a variety of genres that inspire students to read and discuss what they learn.
Last year, I was only able to afford a few subscriptions to use with a small group of students at a time. This year, with this project, all students will have their own copies of the magazine, and we will be able to have whole-class discussions and debates. Also, this year, some articles will have Spanish versions available, which will help students further develop their literacy skills in both English and Spanish.
