My Students

I teach at a Head Start through fifth-grade elementary school. Many of my students have never had the opportunity to play an instrument, much less learn how to write or compose music. I was able to have several music projects funded throughout the years that allowed me to extend my program in terms of strings, percussion, and recorders. Although most of my students are of Haitian-American heritage, we pride ourselves on being diverse as our teaching staff comes from many countries and ethnic backgrounds.

In March of 2020, our students' lives were turned around abruptly because of the COVID-19 virus, and they were forced to learn at home using online resources whether or not they had online access.

Even though I serve a community that is high poverty, my students have found comfort and stability through music and the performing arts. They work hard and are eager to learn. They bring joy wherever and whenever they perform in the community and for the school population.

My Project

The 20-21 school year had been one like no other! Our students struggled with the new way of learning and isolation, yet soared to new heights, despite and in spite of the pandemic!

Last year, my music students learned how to become self-motivated and independent learners, especially my MSO/Virtual learners, and this made them better learners academically and holistically, but there are still technological hurdles to overcome.

The Chromebooks and tablets I received in the past have assisted the students but storage and memory are not sufficient for the tasks that need memory, storage, and speed. Also, Chromebooks are no longer supported by our network, so they are not functional in terms of connecting to the internet in our classroom.

I am requesting a high-end ASUS laptop that the students can utilize to save their music assignments and use for online activities such as recording their performances and presenting to others.

Even though the laptop will be used on campus, it will also be used by my music students during online instruction for our S.T.E.A.M. streaming music projects and assignments.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
