My Students
By the time my fifth graders leave my classroom, I want them to be avid readers. I hope to increase their desire to get lost in literature and expand their knowledge through non-fiction.
Our Title I school community is a diverse blend of backgrounds and cultures connected by the gift of an invaluable education.
My students are energetic, curious, and courageous and possess a strong desire to learn. Our fifth graders come from working class families that often struggle to provide the bare minimum at home with a large percent from households with English as a second language.
My Project
Ahhh, the sound of pages turning. It is a memorable sight when one can observe a child so engulfed in a novel that they can't put the book down. With your generosity, that will be boys and girls from my class. We hope to receive a variety of novels including "Stranded," "Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library," and "Dorko."
Once these books are in my students' hands, they will have the opportunity to participate in an incredible motivational reading program. There is a wonderful association that hosts an annual statewide reading contest, now in it's 30th year, here in Florida. The requested titles are all from the 2014-2015 reading list. My fifth grade readers are all eager to join the program and read the assigned novels with the exception of one thing - a shortage of available texts in our school library.
Access to entertaining, engaging, high-interest novels is a sure fire way to attract even the most reluctant reader.
Your donation to my project will bring my class that much closer to limitless reading adventures. I firmly believe that the best way to become a better reader is to read more often. Children need enticing literary options beyond the textbook to accomplish this goal. Please consider contributing as I help to grow a generation of readers. Thank you.
