Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We have a diverse population with almost entirely minority students in attendance. The demographics of our student population are predominately Latino, African American, and Pacific Islander. English Learners make up 58% of our population, several of which speak very limited English. I work in a district with an integrated special education model which means that all special needs students are integrated into general education courses. The majority of the students I teach qualify for free lunch. Many of our students are homeless and we have a high percentage of foster youth.
One of my main focal points, as an educator, is providing academic confidence to students who fail to see a future for themselves within our education system.
I plan to provide a well-rounded education where art class is “fun” and kids look forward to learning. We have great staff members who love the kids and support them in all aspects of their education. With the array of challenging experiences my students face I strive to make the art classroom a safe haven for my students.
My Project
To introduce my students to a unique method of photography printing I would like to purchase paper, fabric, and chemicals for blue prints (cyanotype).I would like my classes to explore printing both natural objects as well as transparency images. I want this to be a window to discovering the possibilities of photography. This lesson will take place as part of a photography unit that I will be teaching this year.
Introducing sun printing to middle school students is an intriguing way to bring in both science and conversations about the digital era in which we live in.
I also think it will be an interesting project for my students considering the fact that few of my students have actually printed images. It will undoubtedly be a memorable one. Thank you for your support in introducing my students to this unique experience!
