Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

Summer is just around the corner, and I want to help keep my students active and learning. Throughout the year, my students have shown a great deal of interest in arts and crafts and Science activities. This Summer I want them to engage in some activities that will allow them to enjoy both. This project is for the birds. While Earth Day has officially started, nothing makes a more warm and trusting connection to the Earth than watching the birds as they return for the Spring season. Teaching children about this bond with the natural world should be one of the most important events of their lives.

I want them to explore the joys of the outdoor life this Summer by checking out the environment around them.

In this project, my students will craft a bird house, paint it, fill it, and hang it. After they have completed the bird house, let the exploring begin! I want them to use the binoculars to investigate the different birds that will visit their bird house. I am hoping they will try different feed to attract different birds. Next, my students will use their sketch books and colored pencils to illustrate the birds that visit. By taking note of all the different birds that visit, I am hoping this will spark an interest in researching the types of birds that are native to this area. Let’s not forget to have some fun. While students are watching, and sketching it would be nice to just blow some bubbles and have a sweet candy treat to eat; the ultimate Summer activity. This project is designed to help students get out, and get moving for the Summer, and Earth Day gives them a good head start.
