My students are struggling readers in a small, rural community. About 50 percent of the children in our school are from low-income families. I teach over 50 students each day in our reading intervention program. As the reading specialist, I also have responsibility for all of the literacy programs at our school. I also teach after-school tutoring and support summer school teachers by providing appropriate instructional materials for grades 1-2.
Young readers need to learn to read many high frequency words on sight.
High frequency words (sometimes called "sight words") are those which the students will encounter over and over in their reading. Although learning to sound out words phonetically is important, these high frequency words are often difficult to decode using phonics rules. This is why it is so vital for these students to learn to read these sight words automatically. Our struggling first- and second-grade students need materials they can use at summer school and at home to learn and practice these important high frequency words.
