Summer Study = School Success

Help me give my students reading materials they can use over the summer to prevent the summer reading "slump".

My Students

Living in an economically depressed area with a high percentage of drug addiction and/or deaths can be hard for a child, especially if it involves a family member, a parent, a sibling, a cousin, or a beloved neighbor. Our students, who face these problems daily, attend school with smiles on their faces and faith that the world will be okay for them. They discuss their evening, games at the local ballfields, bike rides through town, and what Tank, the local stray they love, did yesterday after school. They share their hopes and dreams; they have goals.

Our students have dreams, goals, and hopes.

We want them to succeed and to help build the lifelong skills they will need in the mid-21st century world. Our school motto, "Educate, Empower, Enrich" exemplifies what our staff wants to give them.

Many of our students struggle with academics and return to school after summer break with a deficit in reading. This deficit, caused by not reading much over the break, takes weeks, often as much as a grading period, for the students to recover what they "lost." Our goal is to lessen that deficit.

My Project

Many students experience a "academic slump" simply because they do not read over the summer. Students who live in poverty are especially susceptible to not reading because they do not have resources at home and often do not have a library or other access to reading materials in their community.

Our staff wants to provide a book for every child in our school, K - 5th Grade, to use at home this summer.

We want at least one book for them to read easily and for pleasure. Few have access to a nearby public library or bookmobile. Help us provide each of our students with a book. If they have it, they will read!
