Summer School That Kids Actually Want to Come To

My Students

The NSSF is a public school that currently serves students from kindergarten to sixth grade. I was lucky enough to help teach our first cohort of second graders, and after two years teaching in Guadalajara, I was so thrilled to return to that same group of kids as we opened our first fifth grade cohort. Now, we are opening a middle school amidst a global pandemic, and I continue to teach 5th grade.

What a year it has been.

We were the first public school in San Francisco to reopen our doors, and it took a tremendous effort to do so. It was also so necessary for many of our students and families, including my own. We will be feeling the effects of this pandemic and interruption to schooling for many years to come, but we hope to minimize its negative impacts with a targeted summer program this year. Many of these students have been learning in an inquiry model since NSSF opened six years ago, and it is so fun to watch them apply their inquiry skills to grapple with complex problems.

My Project

This year has been one for the ages. The coronavirus pandemic sent us home from our classrooms in March of 2020, and while we busted our butts to make remote learning engaging and effective, learning from home is just not the same as learning together in a classroom.

We have been back in our classroom since November of 2019, and we have put the past 7 months to great use; still, some of my students have unfinished learning from 5th grade.

I will be teaching a summer program for those students who need an academic boost before we send them off to middle school and sixth grade. We will be together for 4 weeks, and each week will be built around an epic theme that my kids voted on: stop-motion movie making (about dinosaurs no less), engineering, drawing, and biology.

The best way to learn is to do something you care about, so we plan to do just that. We will be dissecting squid and examining the inner workings of beehives during our biology week, building robots and bridges and egg drop vessels during our engineering week, directing and scoring stop motion movies during our film week, and sketching the world around us and within us during our drawing week. All of these activities need materials to make them come to life, and I am asking for your help to do just that. Thank you so much!
