Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There is no greater joy than looking out over a classroom full of students all engaged in their book! My students love to get caught up in what they're reading. Their excitement over finding characters that they can connect with, of finding a character that is similar in some way to them, their sighs of contentment and satisfaction when they've completed their book and the groans of disappointment when they've reached the end and there is no more story left to tell... these are the moments I live for!
The enthusiasm my students show when they are handed a new story to read and lose themselves in is priceless!
We are lucky as a school to be able to provide students with this experience during the school year, what I would love to be able to do is provide them this same experience for the summer!
My Project
Divergent, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and Ghost are the books my kids must chose from their summer assignment. They will read independently and then engage in lively discussion upon returning to school in August. My students are smart, funny, enthusiastic learners. The sounds of silence in my classroom when my kids get caught up in a book is absolutely amazing! The voracious writing that my kids produce when they are truly engaged in their book is what makes my job worth doing. They love to find characters that resemble them. They enjoy reading about kids their age that are able to overcome obstacles.
My kids love to go on the adventures that a book can take them on, but can't always afford the price of that trip.
What fun it would be able to simply hand them a ticket to that adventure as they leave for the summer!
