Summer Learning: Hands-on Activities to Continue Growth over the Summer

My Students

As an Autism-focused SDC, adapting our learning to an online platform seemed like it was going to pose quite a challenge. My students access their learning through a variety of hands-on experiences, as well as significant environmental supports to keep them engaged. Over the past six weeks, I have been amazed at how well they have adapted to a new way of learning. My students are attending to lessons virtually, and are even continuing to make progress towards individual goals. They are proving why it is so important to hold high expectations for all of our students.

My Project

I teach students in an Autism-focused special day class setting. Our learning is entirely based around hands-on activities to boost engagement and success with new topics. Transitioning this style of learning to an online platform has been no easy feat, but our students continue to inspire us everyday with their willingness to learn. I want to ensure their growth continues over the summer, a time we have historically seen significant regression. This project will provide our families with the materials our students are used to using in the classroom, as well as tools that are verstalite enough to be used over and over again. Magnet letters to target sight words, chalk to write math sentences, and crayons to develop fine motor strength are just some of ways learning can continue over the summer.
